Trustees Week: Hear From WCA Trustee Melanie Monaghan

Time to read: ~ minutes,

As we celebrate Trustees Week, I want to share my journey as a trustee. My name is Melanie Monaghan, and I have spent much of my career in the Voluntary and Community Sector (VCSE).

My career in the VCSE sector spans two decades, including 14 years in CEO and Director roles. I have had the privilege of working with organisations in London, Cambridgeshire, and Bristol, supporting communities, unpaid carers, and young people.

For me, being a trustee is a way to contribute to my local community, wherever I live. I moved from London to Wiltshire nearly six years ago and have continued to use my knowledge, skills, and experience to make a difference. Because of my background, I find understanding the VCSE landscape in an area a good way to understand the community.

My journey as a trustee began when my children were young. I was approached by a senior worker at a youth club and playcentre my children attended, who asked me to join the management committee. Initially, I had misconceptions about the role, thinking it only required a few hours of my time every other month. However, access to training helped me understand the responsibilities involved.

Before becoming a trustee, I worked part-time in the private sector while raising my young children. My experience as a trustee led me to change my career path, moving into the VCSE sector, where I worked for over 20 years before setting up my own freelance consultancy business. This career transformation highlights the impact that volunteering and trustee roles can have on personal and professional growth.

I believe that authenticity, self-awareness, and accountability are essential in any leadership role. As a trustee, I have faced difficult and sometimes unpopular decisions. Balancing the organisation’s interests while understanding the impact of each decision is a crucial part of a trustee’s role.

For those considering becoming a trustee, I would suggest:

  • Understand the Commitment: Being a trustee is a significant responsibility. Make sure you understand the time and effort required to fulfil the role effectively.
  • Seek Training: Take advantage of available training opportunities. Understanding the legal and financial responsibilities of being a trustee is crucial.
  • Be Proactive: Look for organisations that align with your values and where you can make a meaningful contribution. Platforms like REACH can help find trustee roles.
  • Embrace Learning: Being a trustee is a continuous learning experience. Be open to new ideas and perspectives, and don’t be afraid to ask questions.
  • Balance and Prioritise: Prioritise the organisation’s mission and values in your decision-making process.
